8th May 2022 - Kununurra to Fitzroy Crossing

 Distance travelled : 642 kms

Cumulative distance: 5,486 kms

Sponsored by: Stephen Davies.

I just had a light breakfast as my stomach was still working on the mud-cake from last night. It was another sparkling day with low humidity and temps getting up to 31C. I left Kununurra around 7.45 am and headed out on the Victoria Highway to where it meets the Great Northern Highway where I turned left and headed to Halls Creek. Some riders missed the turn and ended up in Wyndham before they discovered their mistake??? The countryside was very picturesque with red sandstone cliffs and valleys of lush bushland.

Grass and bush in front of the red sandstone cliffs.

It looks very much like the landscape of Utah and parts of Arizona in the USA.

The Great Northern Highway heading for the hills.

My first stop was at Warnum aka Turkey Creek. It hasn't changed since I last visited it in 2014 ... still a dump.

A Warnum custom job!!!

After refuelling and a coffee and muffin to supplement my light breakfast I headed  for Halls Creek 160 kms away. I refuelled again at the local Shell garage in Halls Creek which was looking a bit worse for wear. Most of the bikes arrived there to refuel. It looked like they only had 91 unleaded as the 95 had a sign stuck to the front of the pump saying it wasn't working so I refuelled with 91. If I had looked at the sign more closely I would have seen that it said the display on the pump wasn't working but the pump was!!! The bike seemed to run on 91 octane fuel Ok. It has a very clever computer that allows for the lower octane fuel. Half way to Fitzroy Crossing (145 kms) I stopped to have some water and a muesli bar. My camelpak was empty so I had to refill it from my spare Coles 80 cent 1.5 litre bottle. One of the guys paid $12 for two of those bottles at the hotel this evening???

I arrived at the Fitzroy River Lodge at 3.20 pm and booked into my room. In 2010 Colin and I stayed here in a Bush Tent set up in the grounds. This time I have a real room.

We had a buffet dinner at the hotel which was a bit of a shambles due to lack of variety and supply. We had a speil from the hotel manage about the Mac Donalds from the Fossil Downs station. They are similar to the Duracks opening up the western Kimberleys.
