5th May 2022 - Darwin - rest day

 Distance travelled: 0 kms

Cumulative distance: 4366 kms

Sponsored by: Neil Petersen

Today was a rest day in Darwin. I didn't go near the bike at all.

It is very hot and humid here 35C and 80% humidity so it makes walking around pretty uncomfortable. I was going to take the Hop on Hop off bus but decided all the interesting bits of Darwin were within walking distance of the hotel which is in the CBD. I bought myself some new shoes (Crocs) to replace my delapidated sandals.

My new Crocs on an old pair of feet.

I walked down to the Esplanade and along the waterfront. There were lots of storyboards telling the history of Darwin which was discovered in 1839 by John Lort Stokes and named Darwin after Charles Darwin who was a good friend.

The Cenotaph on the Esplanade.

The territory parliament building.

Government House is in a prime bit of real estate overlooking the harbour.

There were a lot of Neuron brand e-scooters running around. They have a restricted area in which they can operate. Everything is through the ubiquitous App and it costs $1 to "unlock" the scooter and 38 cents per minute. They come with a helmet which is mandatory to wear but I saw a lot of people riding them without helmets. You are not allowed to ride on the road and I heard a police car telling some riders to get off the road. Because you have to ride on the pavement pedestrians are liable to get mown down. Their normal speed is 15 kph but that can be increased to 25 kph!! I didn't try one as I would have probably fallen off or hit a pedestrian or both.

The Neuron e-scooter.

Had dinner at an Italian restaurant round the corner from the hotel, very good.

Back to Katherine tomorrow before we head to Western Australia.
